New York City Dance (detail)
New York City Dance was inspired by, and self references a work I painted in 2017 titled Hong Kong Dance. The basis for this painting is a photograph of a busy intersection at 43rd and 8th Ave, where lights, smells, sounds, and a rushing crowd all at once create a sort of sensory overflow, a vibrance that makes all the elements dance together.

Looking down from a skyscraper in Manhattan is a humbling, almost a dizzying experience. While taking the photographs for these works, a flaw in the film created a colored effect that heightened the sense of verticality. All I had to do was add a few subtle touches to bring to life what the camera had already painted for me.

A New Day completes the series by making an exception in that it is the only one that shows the lights of a rising sun. The cast shadows create an intricate pattern of light and dark shapes, giving a sense of warm and cool tones, which I sought to bring out with thin color glazes.
